Spring Blizzards and Prayer!
We just returned this week from a Spring brown bear hunt in GMU 16B and it was by all accounts a time to remember. The bears were a couple of steps ahead of us, and to say that the weather was not conducive would be an immense understatement. In my 14th year of Alaska hunting I have never had to endure a storm that had me calling out to the wife to request folks to pray. I have never encountered a storm that had me remotely concerned about our safety, but the winds began to gain steam on the third evening of the hunt and sometime during the night they became sustained at around 50 to 60 mph. By morning it was simply unreal; temperatures were around 25º and the snow had already drifted to a depth of over a foot in the front vestibule of my tent, but the wind was now gusting to 80, possibly even 90 mph and we were now in the middle of a bona-fide whiteout. Visibility outside of the tents was around 25 yards and it appeared that there was no end in sight. Darlene had told me that the weather for the nearest village was calling for winds 5 to 10 mph and some rain, but at 3,000 ft. elevation we found ourselves in a different world altogether.
In the midst of the extreme gust the side of my Hilleberg Kaitum suddenly began to collapse to the floor (as my tent was now perfectly broadside to the wind) and I knew a guy line had snapped, and I had to get it repaired or the tent would be undone. Derek was out running around in the midst of the storm and now I was forced to get out, and I promptly tied several heavy waterproof food bags to the guy line and stretched it to the limit. Even with this corrected it appeared that the tent would not be able to hold up much longer, then it dawned on me to prop my rifle up at a 45º angle with the recoil pad up against the stressed pole on the inside of the tent and this provided some much needed stability.
On a second trip out the back door of the tent (the front door was drifted in and the door opened directly into the gale force winds) the zipper to the vestibule malfunctioned and came off track and so I was forced to use some handy zip ties to close it for good, and by mid-afternoon I seriously questioned if the tents would survive the ferocious winds. I wondered if the Coast Guard would be able to extract us from the mountaintop in such severe conditions if things went totally haywire, and the prayer was simply for the winds to ease up.
By 7:00 PM I was able to call out and let Darlene know that the prayers of quite a few folks had been answered and the wind was now down in the 50 mph range, and by 10:00 PM the world was almost totally calm. Unbelievably for the next 3 days we had less than 5 hours or so of daylight time that we could actually see beyond 100 yards, so for a total of four days we were pretty much confined to the tents, almost like bears hunkered down in their dens.

The old phrase “Just glad to get out alive,” seemed all too fitting for this round of adventures!
Specials and New Phone Number
Just wanted to make sure everyone sees the new phone number here 304 239 0570 and on the contact page . I have been getting a number of calls on my old line which I am getting ready to disconnect seeing as we have switched to Vonage. Hopefully we will not miss your call in the process.
Stimulus Special? :-)
We have had one group that had to reschedule their hunt until next fall due to a layoff, so we now have one last opening for the September 10th - 17th time slot. This hunt is available as a primary species hunt (moose, brown bear, or sheep) hunt with secondary species available on a trophy fee basis.
This is an 8 day hunt with charters covered and the hunt is in GMU 19 in the Kuskokwim Valley and Western Alaska Range. Please call for pricing and additional cost. 304 239 0570
Please remember that this will help satisfy the governments insatiable greed for the other man’s (or woman”s) money and thus they will be able to afford the next congressional pay raise and future bailouts of corporate executives that will suffer with forced retirement packages of 20 million plus dollars!
Tax Time Specials!!!
As is always the case at this time of year, in honor of the government’s greed and lust for the money of others, we are offering some substantial discounts on the remaining hunts for this Fall 2009 season, and for the 2010 season as well.
Remember they are planning on taking more of our money for the next massive corporate bailout, so please consider booking before April 15th rolls around!
